BOSTON, R. (1974) An Anatomy of Laughter. London: Collins. Describes black humour and humour of many other colours, but without actually mentioning many colour words.
CAILLOIS, R. (1962) Man, Play and Games. London: Thames and Hudson. Though not about colour, professor Caillois analyses the psychological categories of gaming and could be helpful to the colourist.
EYSENCK, H. (1950) Dimensions of Personality. London: Routledge & Kegan Paul. Professor Eysenck makes a useful analysis of humour in terms of Hormic psychology - into comic (cognitive), wit (conative), and the belly laugh (affective and orectic).
JONES, B. (1951) The Unsophisticated Arts. London: Architectual Press. Contains many descriptions of colour in popular art forms.
PENTAGRAM (1989) Puzzlegrams. A colourful collection of classic puzzles designed by Pentagram. London: Barrie & Jenkins.
YEKOJ, L. (1989) The Yekoj-Nospe Colour Test. Independent 29 May 1989. This was a set of amusing pseudo-scientific colour tests on a full page, advertising the Epson colour printer (LQ 860/1060). Note : Yokoj-Nospe reads backwards “Epson Jokey”.

BOUISSAC, P. (1977) Circus and Culture. A semiotic approach. Indiana: America University Publishers’ Group. A modern look at the internal logic of circus entertainment, sometimes mentioning colours.
WEEDON, G. & WARD, R. (1987) Fairground Art, published by White Mouse and New Cavendish. A classic work on the design of fairground structures, everything from the colour of the Waltzer and Whipcar, to the Carousels, and even the sado-masochistic coloured imagery of the two-tier Ghost Train, L’Apocalypse which showed crucified women burnt at the stake and a head being severed.
