Ceremonial Colours

Introduction

Ceremonial colours here are those assumed as part of ritualistic pageantry within a system of rites  or conventions, so that specific colours are assigned to formal occasions.  Although they are signals of allegiance, they are above all from our viewpoint concerned with display.   Dealt with here below will be the colours of the Orders, civil, military and ecclesiastical, as well as the colours of academic degreerobes.

Colours of the Orders

WILSON, R.   (1937)    British Traditional Colours.   London:  British Colour Council.  This contains mounted samples of the colours of the Orders of British Knighthood (the Garter, the Thistle, St Patrick, the Bath, the Union Flag, the Royal Standard, as well as the colours of the British Navy, Army and Airforce, British heraldry, and Tartan colours. It is a standardisation of British traditional colours in commemoration of  the coronation of king George VI and Queen Elizabeth.

Colours of the robes of the London Guilds

These can  be researched in the Guildhall, London, from  prints and paintings.  The coloured material and the actual robes can often be seen in the various  guildhalls.   Otherwise  they can be seen at the London robemakers: Ede & Ravenscroft ,  93 -94,  Chancery Lane;  W. Northam of 1 & 2  Star Yard, Cary Street, WC2, and at J.Wippel’s of Westminster.
