Marketing - South America

<<Back to Introduction

There is a similar pattern of colour taste as in Southern Europe. BRIGHT PURE HUES are generally preferred.

Brazil
Some colour-superstitions still prevail PURPLE - for sorrow, YELLOW - for despair, YELLOW & PURPLE is ill-omened, DARK BROWN is said to bring bad luck.

Ecuador
DARKER COLOURS in dress are more popular in the cool highlands, WHITE & LIGHT COLOURS in the tropical coast belt. VERY BRIGHT COLOURS are preferred by the peasants. RED is confined to the fire service in motor transport.

Paraguay
BRIGHT COLOURS are preferred but the main political colours should be avoided. Some of the parties mentioned in the original BETRO Report are: The RED Colorado Party The ROYAL BLUE Liberal Party The GREEN February Party.

Peru
PURPLE has religious connotations especially in October. Otherwise it is best avoided. Peru is less polychromatic than Mexico and Venezuela.

Venezuela
BRILLIANT COLOUR is more in evidence in architecture than in Peru or Brazil, and more so in Maracaibo than in Caracas. In buildings in Caracas there is evidence of an attitude to colour that is popular in Latin American building generally, namely that of
NEOPLASTICISM, which results in a predominance of white or near-white with smaller areas of primary colours. There is also a colour trend developing from indigenous colour traditions in Caracas.

WHITE, GREEN, BROWN, RED & BLACK used to be political colours. YELLOW designates medical and health authorities.
