Therapeutic Art in Hospitals

Chelsea and Westminster Hospital have taken their cue from Florence Nightingale who in 1859 explained that “variety of form and brilliance of colour in the objects presented to patients have a powerful effect” and “are actual means of recovery”. Following her advice the hospital has inaugurated an ambitious Healing Arts project, and art and design including colour has been made a special subject of research so that students go there to carry out aesthetic and therapeutic experiment.
