Mosaic
Coloured glass mosaic has been used as an art medium in Europe for over 2,000 years. In the technique of mural mosaic, small square tesserae of coloured glass have been used almost exclusively since the fourth century.
Glass mosaic was popularly employed in the vast decorative schemes of the early Byzantine churches, and impressive examples survive in Rome and Ravenna from the fifth and sixth centuries, and in Sicily and Greece.
