Clairvoyance
<< Back to Introduction

Those who practice clairvoyance and divination often adopt ritualistic practices, sometimes based on tradition, but more often on their own beliefs and needs. The American 'psychic counsellors' Tony Grosse and Rob MacGregor used little cubes that have a different colour on each of their six sides. These are picked out of a black velvet pouch, and their colours are thought to provide answers to questions asked by the client. The meanings of the colours are sometimes attributed to tradition, but are more often idiosyncratic.
They believed that "What appears to be random is actually a meaningful coincidence". (Grosse and MacGregor 1989 p.26)

Crystal gazing is one of the best known forms of clairvoyance. A 'sensitive' connects the appearances of colours in the crystal to the state of the client. For example, red can indicate danger or trouble, and yellow can indicate a suprise. Cooler colour can predict excellence and so on. The fairly scholarly crystal-gazer, John Melville, had his own meanings for the colours (Melville 1910 p.30)
