Colour in Dreams
<< Back to Introduction

For many centuries, the colours in people's dreams have been believed to have meanings. Ancient Egyptian dream symbolism was based on colour according to two writers of a Dream Thesaurus. (Tungwelt and Gutheil) The colour that appeared most prominent in an ancient Egyptian's dream was thought to have special significance. Brilliant red signified passionate love, though mixed with black it signified hatred.
In fact if any colour seemed to be mixed with black, even if only by having black patterns on it, it took the opposite meaning of the plain colour without black. Generally speaking, black signified the death of someone close to the dreamer. Amongst the blues, dark blue symbolised success and pale blue happiness. Royal blue communicated the idea that the dreamer will be ordered to do something. Brown indicated sadness and imminent danger. Light Green indicated a bad omen and dark green serenity and joy. Purple was a sign of sadness, Light Red tenderness, brilliant Red ardent love, and dark Red, violent passion. Deep Violet meant the dreamer would acquire power, pale Violet, the dreamer will gain wisdom, pale Yellow, material comfort, deep Yellow jealousy and deceit, and White, happiness in the home.
