Kirlian Lights
<< Back to Introduction

Human emanations of light were actually photographed by the Russian mechanic Semyon Kirlian, who in 1939 used himself as a guinea pig, photographing elongated 'bundles of rays' coming from his skin using metal electrodes.

He developed this system for the treatment of patients, using glass electrodes (Gatland, 1973).

Kirlian reported that people in pain produced ray bundles with very harsh colours. When they were in good health these bundles of rays were normally absent. He also found that the blue light coming from a fingerpad turned to an orange light when a faith healer, Ethel de Loach, was actually treating a patient. Another thing that he discovered was that the light flashes were entirely absent when he photographed a cadaver or dead body. While Dr. Kilner and Semyon Kirlian investigated physical emanations of light, others relied on tradition and their own personal sensibilities.
